Alopecia awareness month 2021

September 28, 2021

Although we focus on hair loss all year round, September has a special place in our heart as it is dedicated to spreading the word about alopecia.

Alopecia Awareness Month is dedicated to bringing awareness to the causes, types, and solutions to hair loss.

This month you can find out the many ways technicians like yourself, can help bring attention and understanding to alopecia and the need for suitable treatments.

So what is alopecia?

Alopecia is the umbrella term for hair loss and is also known as alopecia areata, totalis and universalis. It is a condition where cells in the immune system surround and attack hair follicles and cause hair loss. Androgenetic alopecia, often referred to as 'male pattern hair loss' or 'female pattern hair loss', is the most common type of hair loss. By age 50, half of the population, both men and women, experience noticeable hair loss.

Alopecia affects 147 million people worldwide - at any age and both men and women. It is a relatively common condition and is estimated to affect 15 in 10,000 people in the UK.

How can micropigmentation help hair loss?

Micropigmentation technicians can offer a range of treatments that can offer fantastic solutions for hair loss. We dig in to the most common micropigmentation treatments that can help those dealing with hair loss.

Eyebrows

Semi-permanent eyebrows are a great solution if you have clients affected by alopecia or trichotillomania and want to restore the appearance of full eyebrows, while boosting their confidence. The treatment can last between 12 to 24 months with an annual touch up, so clients do not need to worry about maintenance or drawing their brows on.

A client of ours talks about how semi-permanent brows made her feel and why she searched for treatment. Watch her video below.

Eyeliner

Not so commonly known, semi-permanent eyeliner can help enhance the look of eyelashes for those affected by alopecia or trichotillomania. By applying a subtle fine semi-permanent line through the top and bottom of the eye, this can give your client’s eyes the definition that they envision without eyelashes.

Scalp Micropigmentation

And finally, scalp micropigmentation can be a suitable choice for those who are either not candidates for hair transplantation and who equally do not find wigs ideal. It can be used on both bald heads and can even be used to help camouflage thinning hair.

SMP can help to achieve the illusion of a natural, full head of close‑shaven hair, also known as a ‘buzz cut’. This look is very popular among men who have suffered from extensive genetic hair loss and can give an amazing confidence boost.
